QNu Labs Launches 500 km Quantum-Safe Intercity Network

Bengaluru-based quantum startup, QNu Labs, has launched India’s first indigenous 500 km quantum-safe intercity network based on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology. The network, developed under the National Quantum Mission (NQM) of the science and technology department, was unveiled at ESTIC (emerging science, technology and innovation conclave) 2025.

It uses existing optical fibre infrastructure and fully indigenous, patented technology. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s quantum-secure communication capabilities. It supports the government’s vision of building a secure digital infrastructure and places India among global leaders in quantum technology.

“The launch of this network demonstrates India’s capability not just to participate but lead in critical emerging technologies,” said Sunil Gupta, co-founder and CEO of QNu Labs.

The 500 km network achieves 60% infrastructure efficiency through an innovative architecture that reduces the number of required nodes. A typical global network of similar length requires ten nodes, whereas QNu Labs’ model operates with four, reducing infrastructure costs and enabling scalable nationwide deployment.

“We’ve proven that indigenous innovation can outperform global standards while making quantum security economically viable,” Gupta said.

This network forms the foundation for India’s quantum-safe framework, enabling intercity and inter-state connectivity across various sectors, including defence, government, finance, healthcare, telecommunications, and critical infrastructure.

QKD enables unbreakable encryption by using the physical properties of light particles to create secure keys. Any interception attempt changes the quantum state, alerting users to a breach. The system ensures data protection even against future quantum computers, which could otherwise compromise traditional encryption methods.

The company’s QShield platform, a hybrid Quantum Security-as-a-Service solution, integrates QKD, Post-Quantum Cryptography, and Quantum Random Number Generators. Supported by partnerships with Cisco, Thales, AWS, BSNL, and others, QNu Labs continues to expand its presence across India, the USA, and Australia.
